U.S. House of Representatives Votes to Impeach President Donald Trump For Second Time

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump for the second time on Wednesday, 1/13. Trump faces one article of impeachment, "incitement of insurrection," for his role in encouraging last Wednesday's, 1/6, riot at the Capitol. The vote was 232-197 with 4 no votes. 10 Republicans sided with the Democrats. Impeachment alone won't remove him from office, he must be convicted in the Senate and they are out of session until 1/19. President Trump will leave office next Wednesday, January 20. A Senate trial can still be held after Trump is out of office. After Inauguration Day, the Senate will also have many confirmation hearings for President-elect Biden's cabinet nominees to consider. If convicted, Trump would not be allowed to run for office again thus negating a possible 2024 run. About 6 Republican Senators say they would vote to convict, but that is not enough to reach the required 67 votes for a 2/3 super majority.

President Trump released a video on Wednesday evening, 1/13, denouncing and condemning the mob violence during last week's incursion of the U.S. Capitol. He asked supporters to "ease tensions, calm tempers, and promote peace." He called for "NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind" in any planned demonstrations in the coming week. Trump also called out the tech companies who have chosen to “censor, cancel, and blacklist” saying it was an assault on free speech.
