This year is the 26th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. It is usually the largest collective day of service in the country with over 150,000 volunteers participating in events and activities throughout the region on over 1,800 projects. Due to coronavirus COVID-19, there will be far fewer participants and in-person activities. However, there will be many virtual events. Girard College, in the Fairmount neighborhood, is usually the center of it all with over 5,000 participants and 150 different activities in that location alone. This year it will be focusing on one service project. The Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium will be hosting a free drive- and walk-up coronavirus COVID-19 testing from 9 a.m. to noon at 2101 S College Avenue. See the MLK Day of Service site for more information.

The King Day of Service also promotes year round service and community engagement. The National King Day of Service started in Philadelphia in 1996 with 1,000 volunteers.

Security is being increased in state capitals and major cities across the country leading up to Inauguration Day on Wednesday, 1/20, after the Capitol Riot earlier this month. Law enforcement in Harrisburg, Trenton, and Dover is closing streets, erecting barriers, and adding patrols to protect their respective capitol buildings. On Sunday, 1/17, reports were that protests were light, only a handful or maybe a dozen demonstrators. They were far outnumbered by members of the media, state police, and the National Guard. In Washington, D.C., there will be 25,000 members of the National Guard from several states. A 7-foot non-scalable fence has been erected and check points are up and running. Philadelphia is putting extra security in places like Independence Hall and other areas around the city. The entire Philadelphia Police Department is on notice to work through Thursday. There are no specific and credible threats to Philly at the moment.

A New Jersey teen has been arrested and charged with the stabbing death of a 38-year-old man in Ocean County on Saturday, 1/16. The unidentified 14-year-old has been charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Police were called to a residence on on Herbertsville Road in Brick Township around 2:45 p.m. Saturday. They found Mohammed Khater suffering from a stab wound to the right side of his abdomen. He was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. The teen's identity has not been released because they are a juvenile. They are being held at Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
