President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were inaugurated outside the U.S Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday morning, 1/20. Security concerns and the ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic kept the usual large crowds away from the National Mall. There were 200,000 flags planted on the Mall in place of the people who were not able to attend. Biden spoke much about unity and bringing the country together in his address (see video below). He is taking over in the midst of a deadly pandemic, economic recovery, and recent political upheaval. The Democrats have a majority in the House and the tie-breaker in the Senate which could help Biden push through some of his agenda.

Biden signed 17 executive actions and orders on Wednesday. Some of those include mandating masks on federal property, rejoining the Paris climate accord, ending the building of the border 'wall,' ending the 'Muslim ban,' rejoin the WHO, revoking the permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline, and extending the eviction and foreclosure moratorium through March.

President Joe Biden Inaugural Address

President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden have deep roots in both Pennsylvania and Delaware. Joe was born and raised in Scranton. The First Lady grew up in Willow Grove and went to Upper Moreland High School. They both attended University of Delaware for their undergraduate degrees. Joe went to Syracuse Law. Jill received two Masters degrees, one at West Chester and one at Villanova. She received her EdD at Delaware. They raised their family in Wilmington. They are both Philadelphia sports fans.

During today's virtual celebrations, the Philadelphia area was well represented. Low Cut Connie and Jeff Bradsaw & the All Call Band performed during "Biden's Home State Inauguration Event" (see video below). The University of Delaware Drumline, Boy Scout Troop 358 (Philadelphia), Chinese Cultural Arts Center (Delaware), and Kathy Sledge (Sister Sledge) participated in the "Parade Across America". New Radicals also reunited for the first time in 22 years for the virtual parade. Lead singer Gregg Alexander and band performed 'You Get What You Give' from Philadelphia, where he now lives. Ant Clemons from Willingboro, NJ, performed with Justin Timberlake in the "Celebrating America" Primetime Special. On Thursday, 1/21, Patti LaBelle will participate in the "Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service."
