Philadelphia Police and City Council kicked off the '2021 No Gun Campaign' on Saturday, 1/23. It will continue all year. There were two event locations today at Yesha Ministers at 2301 Snyder Avenue and Greater Exodus Baptist Church at 704 North Broad Street. Authorities collected 224 guns. For each gun taken back, a $100 ShopRite gift card was given out. Greenfield Foundation donated the gift cards. It is only three weeks into the January, but homicides up 10% and shootings are up 37% from this time last year. As of Friday, there have been 33 homicides in the city. "We have to get these guns out of the hands of particularly young people who I think sometimes don't even recognize the damage they can do," Councilmember Cindy Bass said. "You have a lot of people with a lot of guns right now. That’s the only way that they seem to know how to solve a problem and we need to teach and show that there’s a better way."

A Philadelphia man has been charged with scamming over $700,000 from two New York-based companies after promising to deliver personal protective equipment. New Jersey Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced Wednesday, 1/20, that 26-year-old Gauravjit Singh was charged with wire fraud. The Drexel graduate entered into agreements with the unnamed companies through his company, Mask Medicall LLC., that he could and would supply large quantities of PPE. He would have been paid $7.125 million for 1.5 million medical gowns. Singh said he had connections to a Chinese factory and even sent pictures and videos of the gowns being made. He received a payment of $712,500, though his company GJS Solutions LLC, but never delivered the goods. He spent that money on personal expenses and luxuries.

Philadelphia Police have identified the victims of a double homicide in the Bustleton neighborhood on Friday, 1/22. 58-year-old Mark Ruff and 43-year-old Nicole Newell were discovered just before 3 p.m. at the Michner Court Apartments on the 9400 block of E. Roosevelt Boulevard. They had each been shot once in the head. Neighbors had grown concerned after not seeing them for a few days. The mail had begun to pile up outside, the victim's car had not moved, and no one answered the door despite the TV and lights being on. The maintenance man was called to open the door, but it turned out to be unlocked. Ruff was found in the kitchen and Newell was found in a back bedroom. No weapons were found and no arrests have been made.
