Dr. Rachel Levine, former Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, was approved by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, 3/24, as the next assistant secretary of health in the Department of Heath and Human Services. The vote was 52-48. She is the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the Senate. Levine was nominated to the position by President Joe Biden in January. She previously held a visible role in leading Pennsylvania's response to COVID-19 and is at the center of controversy related to the state's handling of positive cases in nursing homes. That did not stop the Senate from voting for confirmation.

Philadelphia Police are investigating an ATM explosion in Northern Liberties early Wednesday morning, 3/24. It happened around 4:30 a.m. on the 1000 block of North 2nd Street near Germantown Ave outside of The Piazza. Neighbors were awoken by a series of loud explosions. Some say they looked out to see three men pulling money out of the Wells Fargo machine. Eventually they got into a white SUV and sped away, leaving cash on the ground. Police and ATF agents are investigating. The incident was caught on several surveillance cameras.

A 21-year-old woman broke into a Northeast Philadelphia home on Wednesday evening, 2/24, and attacked an older female resident before being stabbed to death herself. It happened around 5:50 p.m. on the 1200 block of Elbridge Street in Oxford Circle. The younger woman forced her way into the home and stabbed the 38-year-old woman in the back. The older woman defended herself and stabbed the intruder three times in the chest and twice in the back. The 21-year-old was taken to Einstein Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The 38-year-old woman was also taken to hospital and is in stable condition. No word on a possible motive for the attack, but the two women did know each other.
