A group of peaceful protesters gathered at City Hall and made their way through the streets in Center City on Tuesday night, 4/13. They were demonstrating after a Black man was shot and killed by police officers during a traffic stop in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. It happened in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis. 20-year-old Daunte Wright was pulled over for an expired registration tag on his car. When officers ran his information, they determined he had an outstanding arrest warrant. He had failed to appear in court on charges that he fled from police and possessed a gun without a permit in an incident with Minneapolis police last June. Wright stepped out of the car when asked and officers began to place him in handcuffs. Wright suddenly broke away and jumped back in his car. Body cam footage from Officer Kim Potter shows her draw her weapon and shout, "Taser! Taser! Taser!" She fired once into the driver's side and the car drove off. Potter then exclaims that she accidentally shot him with her gun instead of the Taser. The car crashed a few blocks away. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death was homicide.

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said, "However, the officer drew their handgun instead of their Taser. It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their Taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet. This appears to me, from what I viewed and the officer's reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright."

Chief Tim Gannon and Officer Kim Potter both resigned on Tuesday. Possible criminal charges against Potter are expected to be announced on Wednesday. She was a 26-year veteran of the force.

UPDATE: Kim Potter will be charged with second-degree manslaughter.
