A massive two-alarm fire destroyed a historic church in Philadelphia's Tacony section on Sunday afternoon, 5/9. It started around 5:30 p.m. at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church on the 6600 block of Keystone Street near Unruh Ave. Fire crews arrived to heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof. More than a 100 firefighters were on scene. The fire was brought under control by 7 p.m., but the structure could not be saved. Only a shell of the former place of worship remains. St. Leo's was built in 1884. The parish merged with Our Lady of Consolation parish in 2013 and this church building became a worship site. It was permanently closed in 2019. The church building had been placed on the historic register. There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
