Four firefighters and one civilian were injured when a fire engine crashed through a building in North Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon, 5/27. It happened around 4 p.m. at the intersection of 7th and Girard. Engine 29 was responding to a call for a house fire at Front and Dauphin Streets with lights and sirens on. A car darted across the intersection and the truck swerved to avoid the collision, instead hitting a black SUV. It then hopped the median and plowed straight through the first floor of the building. All four of the firefighters on the engine were injured, two had to be pulled from the wreck. The woman driving the SUV was also injured. They were all taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Only one apartment in the building was occupied at the time and the residents made it out safely. Engineers from L+I were determining the structural safety of the building. Officials remind drivers to yield to lights and sirens. The crash is still under investigation.

Pennsylvania health officials announced on Thursday, 5/27, that they will lift the mask mandate for everyone on June 28 regardless of whether 70% of Pennsylvania residents are fully vaccinated at that time. The mandate will be lifted earlier if the state does reach 70% before then. "After reviewing the vaccination data for people 18 and over and discussing it with the COVID-19 Vaccine Legislative Task Force, we have determined that the commonwealth's mask order can be lifted on June 28 or when 70% of adults get their second dose, whichever comes first," Acting Secretary Alison Beam said. That does not included the City of Philadelphia which has its own restrictions. Currently in Pennsylvania, which follows CDC guidelines, vaccinated people can go without masks in most situations. Philadelphia will lift mask restrictions for vaccinated people on June 11. Masks must still be worn where required by law, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance. Also, planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation, and long-term care facilities, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters. Beam said that 70% of adults have had at least one dose and that 52.7% are fully vaccinated. If those who have gotten a first dose follow through with the second dose the state will reach the 70% goal in a few weeks.

A Montgomery County father has been charged in the death of his infant daughter this past February. 31-year-old Craig Baylis of West Norriton Township is charged with third-degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child for the death of 6-week-old Mackenna Baylis. It happened on February 22. Baylis was tasked with watching the child as the mother went to a doctor's appointment. When she returned, he was cradling the baby and she appeared 'lifeless.' The mother called 911. Mackenna was rushed to the hospital and died a short time later. Baylis told police a number of stories about how the baby fell from the crib or how he fell asleep with her on his chest. However, a forensic neuropathologist found "numerous" hemorrhages, or ruptured vessels, "in multiple areas of the brain and eyes." The county coroner's officer said that Mackenna's cause of death was head trauma caused by "vigorous movement of the head while relatively fixed in relation to the neck." The death was ruled a homicide. Baylis was denied bail and his being held at Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
