Supreme Court Votes 9-0 for Catholic Social Services; Stadium Wawa Sells Beer; NJ Teens Dump Body

The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled today 9-0, siding with Philadelphia's Catholic Social Services over the City of Philadelphia. In 2018, Philadelphia stopped referring children to the foster agency because CSS would not certify same-sex couples to become foster parents. That went against the city's nondiscrimination policy in city contracts. Catholic Social Services sued the City claiming its rights to religious freedom were violated. The suit went through several lower courts before the Supreme Court took it up last year.

There are more than two dozen foster care agencies that contract with the City. CSS would refer any same-sex couples looking to foster children to one of the other groups. Catholic Social Services is over 200 years old and is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

"The refusal of Philadelphia to contract with CSS for the provision of foster care services unless it agrees to certify same-sex couples as foster parents cannot survive strict scrutiny, and violates the First Amendment," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote.

"Today’s decision from our nation’s highest court is a profound one. It brings light and relief to children in need of loving homes and foster parents," Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson Perez said. "It is a crystal clear affirmation of First Amendment rights of catholic agencies and other religious services serving the most vulnerable."

The Grand Opening of Wawa's new "Stadium Store" was held Thursday morning, 6/17. The new store is located at 2600 Penrose Avenue at the Platt Bridge. This is the first Wawa location in Philadelphia to sell beer. Of course it has all the other great Wawa food and amenities to stock a perfect tailgate. This location also has gas pumps. Alejandro Bedoya, captain of the Philadelphia Union and Honorary Co-Chair of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, was there to help promote Philadelphia's bid to be a host city for FIFA World Cup 2026.

Two teenage brothers from Somerset County, NJ, are accused of killing a man and dumping his body in Bucks County, PA. 17-year-old Joshua and 19-year-old Anthony Gamble are charged with homicide, conspiracy, possession of instruments of crime, and tampering with evidence. The investigation started around midnight on the 500 block of East Pumping Station Road in Richland Township. Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub said that a state trooper came across a Suburu with New Jersey plates and hazard lights blinking and stopped to investigate. He found the brothers hiding in the woods with blood on them. The unidentified body was discovered near them. It had been stabbed multiple times. A rented Audi was found nearby with a knife and wipes. Joshua had bought wipes and gloves from a nearby 7-11 last night. The brothers and the victim are not from the area. Joshua is being charged as adult. The DA plans to seek no-bail. This is an ongoing investigation.
