A suspected serial killer, who is also charged in the murder of a Philadelphia Dunkin' Donuts manager, is now charged in the murder of his mother. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner approved the additional murder charges against 39-year-old Keith Gibson on Wednesday, 6/16. Gibson allegedly shot and killed his mother, Christine Gibson, at her work on February 8. He had recently be paroled from prison after serving 10 years for manslaughter in DE when he travelled to Philadelphia to kill her. Gibson is also charged with killing Christine Lugo on June 5 at a Dunkin' location in North Philadelphia. He was arrested June 8 in DE following an armed robbery. Authorities believe he is responsible for several other killings and robberies, including one at a T-Mobile store in Elsmere, DE, in May.

MacKenzie Scott, the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and her husband Dan Jewett, a former Lower Merion school teacher, recently donated $2.6 billion to 286 organizations across the country. Scott, one of the richest women in the world, said that the recipients are "high-impact organizations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked." Philadelphia's Play On Philly received a $1 million gift from Scott. POP provides free high-quality music instruction for children from Kindergarten to 12th grade every day after school. The instruments are loaned at no cost to the student. They are taught individually and also play as an ensemble. The program started at St. Francis de Sales school in West Philadelphia 10 years ago. It expanded to include Freire Middle School and Independence Charter School West.

Delaware County Council has decided to try to take over the 213-acre former Don Guanella School property from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia through eminent domain. The county would have to purchase the land at fair market value, which remains to be determined. The Archdiocese closed the school in 2013 and put the property up for sale. The school buildings take up a small portion of the land, which is mostly covered by old forest. Several developers were interested in purchasing the land and creating mixed-use commercial and residential developments. Marple Township commissioners have rejected those plans. Current neighbors who already use the undeveloped portion of the property for recreation and environmentalists are animate in seeing it preserved. The council still needs to officially vote at an upcoming meeting.
