Ex-Cop Derek Chauvin Sentenced to 22.5 Years in Prison for Murder of George Floyd

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd in court on Friday, 6/25. Chauvin could be eligible for parole in 15 years. He faced a minimum of 12 1/2 years and a maximum of 40 years. The prosecution had requested 30 years. There were several aggravating factors the judge weighed in determining the length of the sentence including i) abuse of a position of trust and authority; ii) treating George Floyd with particular cruelty.

In April, Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Floyd. Chauvin spoke at sentencing saying, "I do want to give my condolences to the Floyd family. There’s going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest. And I hope things will give you some peace of mind."

It happened on May 25, 2020. Chauvin was caught on video along with three other officers restraining Floyd on the ground during an arrest. Chauvin had his knee on the neck of Floyd for a time of 9 minutes and 29 seconds, which caused asphyxiation and death. The three other officers still await trial. They are charged with aiding and abetting. All four officers also face federal civil rights charges. That trial has not been scheduled.
