Smoke from Canadian Wildfires Cause Hazy Skies; MLK Drive Reopens to Cars 8/4; Flood Resource Center

Hazy skies across the Delaware Valley are being blamed on smoke from wildfires in western Canada. The smoke is being carried across the continent on the jet stream and settling high the atmosphere above us causing that haze. The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert because of the smoke. "A code orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups." Those people should limit their time outdoors. A cold front on Wednesday night will push the smoke out of the area.

Philadelphia officials announced on Tuesday, 7/20, that Martin Luther King Drive will reopen to motor vehicle traffic at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4. The road was closed in Spring 2020 at the begining of the pandemic to give residents more space to recreate outdoors and maintain proper social distancing. The paved recreational trail that runs adjacent to the roadway is too narrow to keep 6-feet from other people while walking, running, biking, or skating. Several hundred to several thousand people took advantage of the closed road each day. MLK Drive has been repaved and restriped. There is now only one lane in each direction, preventing passing and slowing speeds. Improvements have been made to the trail as well. The drive will be closed during the day on weekends through October just like it was pre-pandemic.

A Multi-Agency Resource Center will be open for residents of Bucks County and Philadelphia affected by the flooding last week. It will be open from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. both Tues. 7/20 and Wed. 7/21 at Keystone Elementary School on the 1800 block of Keystone Street in Croydon. "Residents are hurting and need and deserve support as they begin to recover from the devastating impact of these storms," Gov. Tom Wolf said in a statement. "Establishing this resource is an important first step to help impacted individuals navigate what is often a confusing process so they can gain access to the needed resources."
