Big Wins For Romney, Casey, and Phillies; Nutter Praises School District 5 Year Plan

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is adding Pennsylvania to the list of states he's won on the way to the Republican nomination for president. He also won Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware on Tuesday. Some say the Pennsylvania primary lost alot of its drama two weeks ago, when Rick Santorum suspended his campaign.

Mayor Nutter yesterday praised the Philadelphia school district’s five-year plan as “stark but realistic” and used the occasion to once more lobby for approval of a new property tax assessment system. He concedes that some of the school cuts will be difficult but says the district’s future requires “shared sacrifice.” Mayor Nutter says closing schools and controlling costs are essential, but more revenue is also needed – revenue he says would come from the so-called “Actual Value Initiative,” a system that will tax real estate based on a new assessment — now under way — of its true market value.

US senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania beat a little-known primary challenger and will seek his first re-election against an as-yet-unknown Republican opponent. Casey won Tuesday’s Democratic primary over Joseph Vodvarka, a retired spring manufacturing shop owner.
