A statue of St. Rita has been reported stolen from a locked case outside the National Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia in South Philadelphia. The shrine posted on its Facebook page on Friday afternoon, 8/13, about its disappearance saying it appears that whomever took the statue was able to open the lock easily. The shrine notified Philadelphia Police. It stands 4 1/2 - 5 feet and weighs 100 pounds, which doesn't sound like the easiest object to steal. It was last seen on Thursday, 8/12, around 7:30 p.m. and was noticed missing around 11:30 a.m. Friday. The shrine is located at 1166 S. Broad Street between Ellsworth and Federal. If you have any information, contact the shrine: https://www.saintritashrine.org/contact-us St. Rita of Cascia is the patroness of impossible causes.

UPDATE: The statue of St. Rita of Cascia that was stolen from the national shrine on South Broad Street in Philadelphia has been found. It has been returned to the shrine. No word on who took the statue. It was found abandoned on Webster St.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced on Friday, 8/13, that a grand jury has recommended charges including lying to the court against three former Philadelphia detectives. Manuel Santiago, Martin Devlin, and Frank Jastrzembski have been charged with perjury and false swearing in official matters in connection to the trial/retrial of Anthony Wright. Wright has since been exonerated by DNA evidence in the 1991 rape and murder of 77-year-old Louise Talley. He wrongly spent 25 years in prison. The grand jury found that Santiago and Devlin used unlawful tactics to coerce a false confession from a then 20-year Wright. Jastrzembski is accused of lying under oath about where certain evidence was found. "These charges are an indication that a Philadelphia jury, in this case a grand jury, can carefully look at evidence and can understand that the law must apply equally to people, whether they are in law enforcement, or supposed to be served by law enforcement," Krasner said Friday.
