Philly Judge Rules Christopher Columbus Statue Stays; Teen Girl Shot in Head; Embiid Super Contract

A Philadelphia judge has ruled that the statue of Christopher Columbus can stay at Marconi Plaza on Broad Street in South Philadelphia after the city decided to remove it last year. Common Pleas Court Judge Paula Patrick wrote in her decision, "It is baffling to this Court as to how the City of Philadelphia wants to remove the Statue without any legal basis. The City's entire argument and case is devoid of any legal foundation." The city moved to have the statue removed as it became a focal point of clashes between different groups of protesters on several occasions in June 2020. Judge Patrick stated in her decision that "it was arbitrary for the [Philadelphia Historical Commission] to interpret that the Statue's removal was necessary in the public interest based on those transient and isolated incidents." She noted that there was no evidence presented of a history of civil unrest surrounding the statue nor was there any unrest since June 2020. Patrick also pointed out that the city only allowed for 28 days of public input when there is a 90 requirement. A city spokesperson said, "While we are very disappointed with the ruling, we're reviewing it now and exploring all potential options - including a possible appeal. The statue remains in Marconi Plaza and will continue to be secured in its existing box." (Read the entire decision below.)

A teen girl is in extremely critical condition after being shot while playing basketball in Tioga-Nicetown on Tuesday night, 8/17. It happened just before 9 p.m. at the Jerome Brown Playground at 20th and West Ontario Streets. The 15-year-old girl was on the court playing a game when she was shot once in the left side of her face and once in the right side of her head. She was taken to Temple University Hospital. Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said that the shooting was caught on video. No word on what led up to the shooting. No arrests have been made and no weapons have been recovered. Police want to talk to witnesses. If you have any information, call police at 215-686-TIPS.

Philadelphia 76ers C Joel Embiid signed a 4-year, fully guaranteed 'supermax' contract extension worth $196 million. "Joel is the definition of elite -- a role model in our community and a true MVP-caliber superstar on the court," said Philadelphia 76ers Managing Partner Josh Harris in a press release. 27-year-old Embiid became eligible for the supermax deal after being named to the All-NBA 2nd team and runner-up in MVP voting.
