The boyfriend has been arrested in connection to the shooting of a mother and young daughter in Southwest Philadelphia early Thursday morning, 10/28. 34-year-old Desmond Bruson has been charged with aggravated assault, child endangerment, false reports, tampering and related offenses. It happened just before 2 a.m. on the 1100 block of South 56th Street. Bruson told police he lived with the 33-year-old victim and her four children (ages 1-11). He said he had gone out for 10 minutes and when he returned he found her unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom and bleeding from the nose. She had been shot twice in the back. The mother was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. Her 1-year-old daughter was struck in the stomach. She was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is in stable condition.

A man surrendered to Philadelphia Police at the 9th District on Sunday afternoon, 10/31, in connection with a deadly hit-and-run earlier in the week that killed a young boy. 21-year-old Khadeir Harris is charged with murder of the third degree, homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death, involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving, accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle, driving at safe speed and max speed limits.

It happened around 4:20 p.m on Monday, 10/25, near 33rd and Huntingdon streets in Strawberry Mansion. 8-year-old Ja-Kha House was crossing the street with his mother when he was struck by a white Buick Enclave and thrown in the air. The child died a short time later at the hospital. The vehicle was found later on Monday evening on 4000 block of Balwynne Park Road. It had bullet holes in the window. The car was reported stolen out of the 26th District. Attorney Richard J. Fuschino, Harris' lawyer, suggests that there was a second person in the vehicle and that they were fleeing gunfire.

Dr. Ala Stanford has withdrawn her name for consideration for Philadelphia's next health commissioner. Stanford is the founder of the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium. On Wednesday, 10/27, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity (ASHE). Stanford cites the need to be involved with the center as reason to pull back her candidacy. The center opens to the public on Wednesday, November 3.

"I realized at our ribbon cutting that my presence within the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity (ASHE) in its infancy is integral. I remain committed to health and well-being of all the residents of the City of Philadelphia, particularly our most vulnerable. Philadelphia was named the number one city in the nation for vaccinating people of color, largely African American, of all urban areas in the United States and I attribute that largely to our work. The Mayor and Philadelphia City Council have pledged their support toward sustainability of our work as we share a common goal to promote health and prevent disease in our communities. I look forward to continued work with the Philadelphia Department of Health and continuing our service to the City of Philadelphia beyond COVID-19 through ASHE. We are just getting started. Thank you all for your support."
