May Day Occupy Philly Demostrations, Mayor Nutter Wants Second Casino

'May Day' brought out a hundred or so Occupy protestors in Center City today. Starting out at the Wells Fargo at 17th and Chestnut around noon then moving through the streets they blocked traffic for a while at 18th and Walnut. They were under the watchful eye of Philadelphia Police the entire time, who had wagons lined up in case they needed to make mass arrests. Those proved to be unnecessary here in Philly. This coincided with protests around the country for May Day, the International Worker's Holiday, some of which turned violent in Oakland and Seattle.

Mayor Nutter is working to keep the former Foxwoods casino license in the City of Philadelphia. Not only does he believe that Philadelphia should have another casino but that by having that casino in the city it will bring great economic development in the form of jobs as well as casino taxes for the cash strapped city. The city would gain about $12 million, plus $5 million to the school district. “This marketplace can certainly host two licenses. We want the economy vitality and the jobs that come as a result of casino development, so we will take all steps that are possible and available to hold onto this license here in Philadelphia,” the mayor said today.

Tonight, great weather, partly cloudy skies and comfortable temperatures in the low 70's upper 60s all evening in Philadelphia.
