Judge Rules Mask Mandate for Perkiomen District; Man Killed in Carjacking; Teen Shot at Sweet 16

A federal judge in Philadelphia ruled in favor of a group of parents and students to reinstate the mask mandate in Perkiomen Valley School District in Montgomery County. The Pennsylvania school mask mandate was lifted in December and left up to individual school districts to decide their own policy. The Perkiomen school board voted to go to an 'optional' mask policy in January. The plaintiffs in this case argued that the optional policy violated the Americans with Disabilities Act because it put immunocompromised students (like their children) at risk. Judge Wendy Beetlestone ruled, "Plaintiffs have therefore carried their burden and their Motion for a Preliminary Injunction will be granted." Beetlestone did say that the school district could file to lift the injunction if the cases drop in the future.

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy announced on Monday, 2/7, that the mask mandate in NJ schools will be lifted on March 7. Individual schools may continue mandates if they wish.

Delaware Governor John Carney announced on Monday, 2/7, that he will lift the state's indoor mask mandate this Friday, February 11 at 8 a.m. The K-12 school mask mandate will remain in effect until March 31

A man was shot and killed in a carjacking on Sunday night, 1/6, just after he left visiting his mother in Northeast Philadelphia. 60-year-old George Andes was getting into his car outside of his mother's home around 8 p.m. on the 2100 block of Afton Street in Rhawnhurst when the suspect opened fire. He was shot in the right side of his abdomen. The suspect took off in his car. Andes was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:03 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.

A teenage boy was injured in a shooting at a Sweet Sixteen party in Philadelphia's Tioga section early Sunday morning, 1/6. It happened at 12:03 a.m. in a rented home on the 1600 block of West Ontario Street. A mother had rented the home specifically for her daughter's birthday. There were about a dozen people inside at the time of the shooting. A gunman opened fire from outside and shot around 20 rounds. The 17-year-old boy was struck once in the left lower back. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition. No weapon was recovered and there have been no arrests.
