A Bucks County mother accused of shooting her two sons in their home last week is now charged with murder after they passed away. 38-year-old Trinh Nguyen is now charged with two counts of first degree murder, one count of attempted murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and possession of a controlled substance. On Monday, 5/2, Nguyen shot 13-year-old JT and 9-year-old Nelson while they were in their beds. They were not expected to survive their injuries, but were on life support at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia because they were going to be organ donors. They succumbed to their injuries on Friday, 5/6. Nguyen had planned the killings for at least a week. Authorities found a handwritten will in the home dated April 25, 2022. After shooting her sons, Nguyen tried to shoot a neighbor. She then went to New Jersey to purchase heroin to kill herself. She was found inside her vehicle in the parking lot of her church with the drugs. She was under the influence. Nguyen was facing eviction and was severely behind in rent. She was also in a custody battle with one of her son's father.

The man accused of opening fire on a Brooklyn subway last month has been indicted on two federal counts. 62-year-old Frank James has been charged by a federal grand jury with committing a terrorist attack or other violence against a mass transportation system and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. Both counts carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. James donned a gas mask and set off smoke grenades before firing at least 33 times on the train and in the station. 10 people were shot and 19 were injured. His bank card, cell phone, and a key to a rented van were found at the scene. The gun was also found. The van was rented in Philadelphia and driven to Brooklyn. It was found near another subway station. He was arrested the next day in Manhattan's East Village after he called in a tip on his location. James, who is African American, has a lengthy criminal record and had posted negative videos on social media.

The Philadelphia School District announced that it will begin weapons screenings at elementary and middle schools starting Monday, May 9th, for grades sixth to eighth. "Screenings will take place at six schools per day, and be conducted at every middle and elementary school with middle grades at least once before the end of the school year," the district said. The screenings will be conducted by school safety officers with at least one school leader present. They will use metal detector wands or mobile metal detectors as students arrive for school. Bag and backpacks may be checked. Students will have the opportunity to dispose of any item before screening without consequence. "A weapon is defined as, but is not limited to, firearms, whether loaded or not; pellet or BB gun; knives; cutting instruments; nunchaku; brass knuckles; electronic shock devices; or mace and any other tool, instrument, or object used or intended to be used to inflict serious bodily injury to another," the letter said. High school students have had metal detectors installed in their schools for years.
