Barnes Foundation New Building Opening May 19

Philadelphia's own Barnes Foundation has finally reached a finish point. After much controversy over whether to move the artwork to Center City or keep it in Lower Merion, it has been moved to a incredible new building, built especially for the collection. The new building, on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, has been constructed with many of the influences of Albert C. Barnes including a central glass atrium to enhance the natural light upon the paintings and a formal horticultural education that Barnes' wife Laura had brought to the original location.

A new addition to the foundation is limestone from the Negev Desert in Israel, which is featured in on many surfaces throughout the building. The three level building incorporates skylights, seminar/class rooms, and even an auditorium for viewings. This new location has no doubt enhanced the experience of the Barnes Foundation. They open the doors on May 19th and are holding a large gala event to celebrate returning the art to its former glory.

The Barnes is also offering 56 hours of free admission and activities opening week. If you cannot make it out to the opening, you can experience bit of it by taking a virtual tour at The Barnes. It is destined to be one of the greatest revealings in Philadelphia art history.
