Michael Phelps vying to take home record number of medals?

Michael Phelps picked his events for the upcoming London Olympics. In addition to the three team relays he will participate in, Phelps entered into seven other individual events. This means that Phelps is in the running for 10 Olympic medals, which would outdo his 8 medals from Beijing. To up the ante, Phelps was recently on 60 Minutes, where he said that he would retire after the London Olympics. Leaving with 10 medals would be a worthy end to a career as varied and prolific as Phelps’. After his performance at the Beijing Olympics and the drama that ensued afterwards, some doubt his ability to train well enough and to stay on task while competing.

Though entered into 10 events, this does not mean he will compete in all 10. Phelps will not necessarily compete in all ten events. Often times, competitors enter in all the events they could compete in, and then only remain in the ones they and their coaches feel they are the most competitive in.

To beat an overall record, Phelps only needs to win three medals to become the career athlete with the most medals.
