Philadelphia City Council has passed a $3.6 billion dollar budget. Property taxes will increase 3.5% and businesses will pay higher Use and Occupancy taxes giving $40 million dollars in new money to the school district, about half of what Mayor Nutter’s School Reform Commission was hoping for. Nutter’s proposed AVI property tax reform was put on hold for a year.

Strong storms swept through the Philadelphia region this morning leaving 46,000 without power as trees and wires came down in heavy wind and rains. Commuters on the Paoli-Thorndale Regional Rail line and the Fox Chase line had to make other plans or face long delays as down trees on the tracks got cleaned up.

Phils open a series with the Miami Marlins in Florida. Cliff Lee is still in search of his first win this year.

Excessive heat warning through the weekend for the Chester County Jazz Festival. High 90’s in Philadelphia.
