Of Monsters and Men Break Out at the Piazza

On July 28th, The Piazza at Schmidts put on another show for the free summer block party series hosted by 104.5. Previously this summer, they have hosted The Dirty Heads, Neon Trees, IAMDYNAMITE, and more. Of Monsters and Men played after JJAMS and Tim Williams, both whom put on stunning shows. Of Monsters and Men formed originally in Iceland in 2009 and can be categorized as a six piece indie rock band. Although they have only been in America about a year and only played a few shows, they are topping the charts. Some have called them "the new Arcade Fire" but personally I disagree as their sound is not as eclectic. The show was incredible and the sound was very original. I was shocked that their live show was better than their studio work, as that quality is difficult to find. I talked to others who attended the show or others at the Piazza and they had problems with muffled sound when in the very center of the venue but everywhere else it was fine. So if you go to a show at the Piazza, make sure you do not stand in the dead center. They played all the songs off their first album, My Head Is An Animal, and finished off the album in the encore. They started the show off with Dirty Paws, one of their well known singles, and then jumped into higher energy songs such as Little Talks and King and Lionheart. Given that they are a new band with limited fan base they did a wonderful job drawing in the crowd, most of whom had never heard of them. They played their show with a static energy and you could feel their influence throughout the crowd. Their full set list can be found below. The next large free show at the Piazza will be this coming weekend, Sunday August 5th for the 2nd Street Festival. Can't wait to see Awolnation and Imagine Dragons September 8th at the Piazza.
