Make Music Philly is coming Friday, June 21st. The concept is "All Day. All Over. All Free." The city-wide, free, do-it-yourself music festival will feature professional and amateur musicians performing at traditional venues, non-traditional spaces, and in both organized and informal events. Everyone in Philadelphia is encouraged to participate as either an attendee, venue host, musician, or volunteer.

Make Music Philly will be joining a global celebration of music held each year on the summer solstice as part of World Music Day. The concept began in 1982 with Fetes de la Musique in France. It first came to the United States in 2006 as National Music Day. Now more than 500 cities in 110 countries are involved. The day of music runs from 8 am to 8 pm and all events are free.

Right now it is time to register for Make Music Philly. If you are a musician/band and want to play on June 21st or if you are a venue and want to host an event, you need to sign up to become official and listed. The website (www.makemusicphilly.org) has a unique "matchmaking" software that can help musicians and venues hook up or you can just list an event that you've already curated/booked. Any caliber of musician can perform - all ages and all genres too. You can register just about any place as 'venue' - from a traditional venue, to a store front, park, sidewalk, or even your front porch. You have to make sure you have the right permits though. MMP will need volunteers too so if you are inclined you can sign up as well.

"Philadelphia is blessed with a tremendous musical legacy," said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. "Make Music Philly will celebrate and build upon that legacy by inviting citizens to organize and attend free performances throughout the city all day long."
