Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) + Julianna Hatfield (Blake Babies) = Minor Alps

Matthew Caws lead singer of the indie power pop group Nada Surf and Julianna Hatfield of Blake Babies and Some Girls have joined forces to form the group Minor Alps. This partnership has also produced a new album titled, Get There.

I am always interested where the inspiration comes from for a group's name. Minor Alps comes form the French country side where Mount Ventoux , a singular peak, is right outside Matthew's parents cottage. The picture was taken by Autumn De Wilde for the album Get There and while talking with Matthew out came Minor Alps.

Caws and Hatfield have collaborated in the past when Hatfield was with Blake Babies. In the very early part of Nada Surf's career Caws and Hatfield shared lead vocals on â€œSuch a Beautiful Girl.â€ Over the years they have appeared on each others records and talked about doing a project together and now we have it.

I must admit, I have been a Nada Surf fan for some time. I find their music powerful, moving and the lyrics speak to me. Most if not all of their songs have great hooks. Matthew Caw's voice is truly unique with a haunting, distinctive and edgy quality. He sounds like no one else. I have been to more than a couple of Nada Surf's concerts and have marveled at the enthusiasm of the audience. When an audience knows all the lyrics, sings along and dances, you know. You know you are among folks with true enthusiasm for the performers and the performance. I have bought many of their albums and like them all but especially like; Let's Go, The Weight Is a Gift and their recent effort The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy.

Up until now, I have not been at all familiar with Julianna Hatfield's work. I have listened to a lot of her stuff on YouTube and I find her style and voice unique. Other have described her voice as girlish, youthful,thin, and innocent and her deliver as harsh. I just like her sound and style. It is sort of the The Go-Go's on steroids.

Julianna and Matthew both had very early success along with the pressure and unwelcome direction of their record labels that follow many successful young artists. For Matthew it was â€œ Popularâ€ and for Julianna is was â€œMy Sister.â€ Huge hits that could have set their artistic direction but didn't. Both have taken their careers in an independent way in terms of the independent record labels they use and the performance venues in which they perform. They have kept control of the product they produce.

Minor Alps debut album Get There will be released by Barsuk Records on Oct. 29th. Minor Alps will start their 11 show tour on Nov. 8th in Seattle and come to Phila. appearing at the World Cafe on Nov. 22nd. I think this will be something different from both artists... Joe S
