Concert Review/Setlist: We Are Scientists and Surfer Blood at Johnny Brenda's Philadelphia 10/04/14

On the first real cool night of autumn in Philadelphia, the Splatter Analysis Tour pulled into Johnny Brenda's on Saturday night. The Sold Out show was comprised of a mix of passionate fans of each of the night's acts ready to see a rock show and hear their favorite band play in the intimate setting. Needless-to-say there was plenty of singing along and request shout-outs.

Eternal Summers from Roanoke, VA, took the stage first. Singer/guitarist Nicole Yun is powerful on guitar, but delivers a smooth vocal. Drummer Daniel Cundiff is aggressive and hard driving to match Yun's raw punch, while bassist Jonathan Woods is steady with the groove. Yun mentioned Philadelphia being like their 'second home' and they were a welcome start to the night.

Surfer Blood, from West Palm Beach, was second on the night. Their combination of catchy songwriting, easy grooves, and jangly guitar harmonies is the perfect feel good indie/surf rock formula. Add in the boyish charm and collared shirt of lead singer John Paul Pitts and you'll have doe-eyed college girls in the front singing along to every song. It helps when he walks into the crowd to get up close and personal. Everyone at this show already knows the secret, these guys are good.

We Are Scientists took the stage a little after 11pm to the full house. This was night three of the current tour and they seem like they are already in full swing. They launched into the set bringing full energy into each performance on stage. Lead guitarist Keith Murray can be frenetic at times but mostly focuses and controls that energy and delivers to the audience. Bassist Chris Cain and drummer Andy Burrows complement Murray providing a solid rhythm and groove. The witty song break banter between Cain and Murray is usually disaster for some bands, but they actually are quick and funny, offering some humorous engagement with the audience between songs. The guys left everyone wanting more after a 14 song set, but there was no encore on this night. There was a good dose of songs from their 2014 release TV en Français mixed with classic hits like “The Great Escape” and “After Hours.” (see complete setlist below).

If the tour is coming to a town near you in the next few days make sure you get there early and see the whole night's bill, Eternal Summers and Surfer's Blood were great. The veterans from New York (via Berklee, CA) We Are Scientists are still at the top of their game, going strong since the late 90's.
