Charlie Brown to Air on PBS; CDC Urges NO Thanksgiving Travel; Punxsutawney Phil Goes Virtual

In October, streaming service Apple TV+ gained exclusive rights to the Peanuts. For the first time since the 1960's the iconic holiday specials would not be broadcast on network television. Apple made 'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown' available to stream for free, no subscription needed, over several days near Halloween. Fans were still upset at the prospect that the show(s) would not be seen on regular television. There are still people would do not have access to the internet and rely only on over-the-air broadcast channels for television. Online petitions received thousands of signatures. In response, Apple TV+ has made a deal with PBS to broadcast "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" on Nov. 22 and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" on Dec. 13. Both will also be available to stream for free on Apple TV+ (Nov. 25-27 for "Thanksgiving" and Dec. 11-13 for "Christmas"). Apple TV+ subscribers will get access to the specials on Nov. 18 and Dec. 4.

The CDC has released guidelines for celebrating Thanksgiving. First off, it "strongly recommends" not traveling and only celebrating with those in your own household. Dr. Henry Walke, CDC's Covid-19 incident manager, said there is "no more important time than now for each and every American to redouble our efforts to watch our distance, wash our hands and, most importantly, wear a mask."

"CDC is recommending against travel during the Thanksgiving period," he said. "For Americans who decide to travel, CDC recommends doing so as safely as possible by following the same recommendations for everyday living."

If you do celebrate with others then they suggest:

- Check the Covid-19 infection rates in areas where attendees of the dinner live.

- Limit the number of attendees.

- Host the gathering outdoors, if possible.

- Increase ventilation by opening windows and doors, or by placing central air and heating on continuous circulation. More information on increasing ventilation in your home can be found here.

- Make sure people are sitting 6 feet away, even outdoors.

- Wear a mask at all times, except when eating and drinking.

- Avoid singing or shouting, especially indoors.

- Avoid potluck-style gatherings.

- Have one person who is wearing a mask serve all the food so that multiple people are not handling the serving utensils.

- Use single-use options or identify one person to serve sharable items.

Organizers say that Punxsutawney Phil and his inner circle will be alone on Gobbler's Knob this coming February 2 when the groundhog makes his prognostication on an early spring or longer winter. Normally, thousands brave the cold, early morning weather to hear the prediction in the small town northeast of Pittsburgh. Groundhog Day 2021 will be streamed and the call on the groundhog's shadow will be made virtually. The organizers will continue to monitor the pandemic, "It is very unlikely, but it if it is determined that we can logistically and safety hold any in person activities related to Groundhog Day, we will make that information available if developed."
