Building Collapse Kills Philadelphia Firefighter; Arrest for Attacks on Women; Philly Pools Opening

One firefighter was killed and 5 others were injured after a building collapsed during a fire in the city's Fairhill section early Saturday morning, 6/18. It started around 2 a.m. on the 300 block of West Indiana Avenue near North 3rd Street. The 3-story building housed a pizzeria and residences. The collapse happened after the fire was put out. The School District of Philadelphia has a new superintendent. 51-year-old Dr. Tony B. Watlington Sr. was sworn in during a ceremony on Thursday morning, 6/16. He was most recently the superintendent of the Rowan-Salisbury School System in North Carolina. Watlington Sr. replaces Dr. William Hite who stepped down form the role after 10 years. Two Teens Charged w/ Murder in South Street Shooting; Tornado in Blackwood; Kenso Drug Corners Sold

Two teenagers are now in custody for their role in the shootings on South Street last Saturday 6/4. 18-year-old Qaadir Dukes-Hill of Drexel Hill and 18-year-old Nahjee Whittington of Philadelphia were taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday morning, 6/9. Dukes-Hill is charged with the murder of 24-year-old Alexis Quinn. Whittington is charged with the murder of 22-year-old Kris Minners. Love from Philly, a Philadelphia music and cultural festival, is returning this weekend in-person at Eakins Oval across from the Philadelphia Art Museum. The original festival debuted as a three-day virtual concert in May 2020 featuring dozens of artists as a way to support local artists at the start of the pandemic. Philadelphia City Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson introduced a new bill that would changed the city's curfew for minors to help stave off youth violence. Currently, the curfew for minors aged 13 and under is 9:30 p.m. and aged 14-15 is 10 p.m. Those aged 16-17 is currently Midnight.
