SEPTA has instituted new changes to increase safety for drivers and riders during the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Riders will now board buses and trolleys from the back door. Riders with diabilities can still use the front door. Onboard fare collection has been suspended. Protective shields have already been added to all buses for the drivers. President Donald Trump extended guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday, March 31, to control the spread of coronavirus COVID-19. The School District of Philadelphia has announced that schools will be closed indefinitely. Superintendent William Hite said in a statement, "Safeguarding the health and well-being of our students, our staff and the broader Philadelphia community is our highest priority. On Monday night, 3/30, President Donald Trump approved Pennsylvania's disaster declaration. Governor Tom Wolf made the request for the declaration on Sunday, 3/29. This will allow the state and local governments to get money and resources from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to fight the disease. Starting on Monday, March 30, any Philadelphia residents in need will be able to pick up boxes of free food. There are about 20 pick-up sites throughout the city. They will be open Mondays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon. One box of food will be given for each household. Supplies will last 5 days. You do not need an ID or proof on income to get the food. President Donald Trump has signed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) on Friday afternoon, 3/27. The United States Congress approved the act by voice vote earlier Friday. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., tried to force a recorded vote, but was denied because there was a quorum of House members present. The bill will send cash to many Americans, give loans/grants to small business, bolster unemployment programs, fund hospitals and more.
