Fire Kills Elderly Vet; Philly Woman Charged with Murdering Children; Soda Tax Victory for Health |

An overnight fire killed an elderly veteran who couldn't get out of his home. World War II vet Benjamin Boone, who was in his 90s and known as Uncle BB to the S. Taylor Street neighborhood, was trapped on the second floor. Firefighters got to the scene in Point Breeze, but they could not get him out. There was no evidence of a working smoke detector.

An amended version of Mayor Kenney's proposed "soda tax" made it past committee in Philadelphia's City Council this evening. It will go before the entire council next Thursday. Kenney had proposed a 3-cents per ounce tax on sugary drinks to pay for universal Pre-K, community schools, and parks and recreation imporovements. A man was found dead, shot at least 6 times, in the parking lot of a McDonald's in Norristown, and the gunman is on the loose. Workers say they heard shots but no argument before. The gunman got away on foot.

A New Jersey transit bus and a Duck Boat were involved in an accident on Tuesday around 6:49 p.m. Officials says the bus had passengers on board and the Duck Boat had no passengers. Police say the two vehicles sideswiped each other on the westbound lanes of 676/Vine Street Expressway near 22nd Street. Seven people were on the bus and no one was injured.

Police have made an arrest in connection with the murder of a 78-year-old man in Southwest Philadelphia last week. The suspect, 18-year-old Quintis Clark, turned himself in to police late Monday. Police discovered Joseph Daly on his living room floor in a pool of blood on May 31st. The backdoor was unlocked and window broken. Daly's van was initially missing but recovered last Thursday. Philadelphia Police are looking for a man who threw a beer bottle at Phillies' first baseman Ryan Howard at the end of Saturday's game at Citizen's Bank Park. Utility crews are restoring service after strong storms swept through New Jersey downing branches, trees and power lines. Eduard Prades of Spain and Megan Gaurnier of the United States were the men's and women's winners of the 2016 Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. Twenty-eight-year-old Prades finished the 110.7-mile men's event Sunday with an unofficial time of three hours, 57 minutes, 37 seconds.
