Car Chase Couple was High; Temple Apt Invasion Arrest; Regusters Denied Bail Reduction

The couple involved in yesterday's wild interstate car chase from Camden to North Philly using two stolen police cars were apparently high on heroin at the time. The two police vehicles were not the first cars they stole nor was it the first car chase that Blake Bills and Shayna Sykes were in this week. Officials believe that the two stole a car on Tuesday morning in Philadelphia and tried to car jack another in Camden before they happened upon the officer's running cruiser starting the reckless joyride. They are also suspects in a third police chase from Sunday in which they got away from an officer trying to pull them over for suspected drug activity. That time they were driving Sykes' grandmother's Mazda that they had stolen on Saturday. The two are currently in custody in Philadelphia, but are facing a multitude of charges in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Philadelphia Police have arrested two men and are seeking a third in Monday's home invasion and robbery of four Temple students. The incident occurred in an off-campus apartment four blocks from the North Philadelphia campus. On Monday, three armed men followed a female student home and forced their way into her apartment around 7:30 pm. near 18th and Berks streets. They proceeded to bind her and her roommates with duct tape and steal their laptops, cellphones and cash. Police released this surveillance video of the suspects. They have not yet released the names of the two in custody.

Christina Regusters, 19, has been denied a reduction her $4 million bail today. Regusters is charged with the abduction, assault, and rape of 5-year-old kindergarden student Nailla Robinson in January in the Cobbs Creek section of West Philadelphia. A preliminary hearing has been rescheduled until next month. District Attorney Seth Williams is planning to call a grand jury to investigate the case. Regusters' attorney argued that his client has no previous criminal record and has ties to the community. Prosecutor Erin O’Brien countered that the complexity and brutality of the crime warranted the high bail in addition to the fact that if released she'd be returned to the home the crime allegedly took place and living with persons that have not been ruled out as suspects. Regusters has been in protective custody in Northampton County Prison since late February month after being assaulted in jail.
