One-Year Anniversary of Winehouse's Death

A year ago, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London home from alcohol poisoning. The singer was only 27 years old. Known for her bluesy crooning, Winehouse won five Grammy awards with her US breakthrough album “Back to Black”.

Since her death, her fame has not decreased. On September 14th, 2011, which would have been her 28th birthday, the Winehouse family unveiled the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The foundation raises money that is given to various charities to help care for disadvantaged youth. Originally only a UK-based, the foundation created a group in the US earlier this year, working with New Orleans Jazz Orchestra to create “after school music club houses”.

In addition to starting the foundation, her father, Mitch, wrote “Amy, My Daughter”, which was released this summer. In interviews about the book’s success, Mitch regrets the decision to release it. “I wrote it fairly quickly after Amy passed away. I found writing it quite cathartic and I thought it would help me in my recovery, and to a certain extent it has, but reading the book back for edits was very difficult indeed; more difficult than writing the book.”

Winehouse has also had posthumous album releases, with more to come. “Lionness: Hidden Treasures” was released late last year, with Winehouse covering old Jazz standards including: “Body and Soul”, “The Girl From Ipanema”, and her especial favorite “Valerie”. Mitch Winehouse has said that he is working with producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson to see what other material is available to release.
