The death Philadelphia blues guitarist and songwriter Danny "Rio" DeGennaro has been ruled a homicide by Bucks County authorities, where he was killed last week. Bristol Township police found Daniel DeGennaro, 56, dying from a shotgun wound to the chest near the front door of his Crabtree Drive home, investigators remained tight-lipped regarding any leads they may have.

Philadelphia Murder Rate Up Again

In 2011, Philadelphia earned a title that no one is proud of. Murders in the city are up again. Philadelphia has the highest homicide rate of the nation's 10 most populous cities, according to statistics provided by each city's police department. Even worse, fewer murders are getting solved.

Philadelphia Councilwoman Collects $478,000 DROP Rayment

Philadelphia Councilwoman Marian Tasco retires, collects a huge DROP payment, and then goes back to work. The Daily News reported she will collect more than $478,000 at retirement this week, then return to office within days, and keep all the money. Tasco’s participation in the controversial DROP program probably cost her the race for council president. Others in the program will also retire briefly, collect and return to work.

Winter Classic Penn State Hockey

Hockey's Winter Classic is January 2nd between the Flyers and New York Rangers. One of the other many outdoor hockey games on tap for Citizens Bank Park next week will be a college battle between 14-2 Penn State and 7-3 Neumann University on January 4th.

Neumann is one of the top squads in Division III while Penn State is transitioning up to the Division I level from club status in the ACHA. Nittany Lions head coach Guy Gadowsky says that transition is going quite well.Read More

Mayor Nutter named 77-year-old Sonia Sanchez, a noted poet and teacher, the city's first poet laureate.

Nutter says Sanchez "exemplifies the role a poet can play in helping to define a city and helping its citizens discover beauty."

Sanchez, who lives in west Philadelphia, says she has already fielded congratulations from fellow writers Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. She says people are telling her she's been the city's unofficial poet laureate for years.Read More

Arlen Specter Does Stand Up Comedy in Philadelphia

Arlen Specter made an appearance this week in Philadelphia - at Helium Comedy Club. No joke. Specter did a few minutes of stand-up at the club's open mic night.


Philly.com reported on Specter's appearance, "I've been in comedy now for 30 years," the former senator explained.

Taking a try at stand-up was a natural step after spending so many years in the "sit-down comedy" of Congress - and, Specter noted, it was considerably less expensive.

Philadelphia to Recycle Christmas Trees

The Philadelphia Streets Department has announced that The Residential Christmas Tree Recycling Program will run for two weeks in 2012.

Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson said Tuesday, the 24-year-old program would provide citizens an environmentally safe alternative to dispose of used trees from Tuesday, January 3 through Saturday, January 14.
