Philadelphia Traffic Court Shaken Up

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Ronald Castille today announced a major shakeup in the wake of what he says is corruption and ticket-fixing at Philadelphia Traffic Court.

He has appointed Common Pleas Judge Gary Glazer, a former federal prosecutor of corruption cases, to take control of Traffic Court and oversee reforms.

Glazer said the reform will be a real one and is stepping in to restore public confidence in the traffic court.

Citizen Bank Branches Closing and Laying Off

Citizens Bank's plans to close nine Philadelphia-area branches and lay off 250 employees has been detailed in a recent filing.

Citizens said it would be consolidating a Broomall location in the Acme Supermarket at 1991 Sproul Road into a branch in the Lawrence Park Shopping Center. It will also be consolidating its Flourtown site from 1461 Bethlehem Pike into a Bethlehem Pike and East Mill Road branch.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reports the biggest excavation project in Philadelphia history is taking place in West Philadelphia.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is spending $150 million preparing part of the old Civic Center site for an outpatient-care center that will sit on top of a five-story underground parking garage. The pediatric medical center’s expansion plans for ambulatory care, however, extend far beyond the city.

Andy Reid said he's confident Vick would start against the Jets Sunday even though Vick watched practice from the sideline this week.

The Eagles are still clinging to playoff hopes despite a 5-8 record. They’ll need Vick to be sharp this week against one of the toughest defenses in the NFL.

The government estimates that more than 13,000 people were treated last year in emergency rooms for injuries involving putting up holiday decorations. Those injuries include everything from falls from ladders while stringing lights, to cuts resulting from broken glass ornaments.

A recent survey by the couponing website www.retailmenot.com finds that about a third of us are major shopping procrastinators, and a major reason is trying to outwait merchants for a deal.

Many retailers made sure that the big box items that they wanted to move they discounted earlier in the holiday shopping season….so most deals are already gone.

Slain Cops on Philadelphia Billboards Draws Fire form FOP

The Daily News reports:

The Fraternal Order of Police blasted the Barbera's on the Boulevard car dealership Monday for using photos of fallen officers in a recent billboard campaign.

On Friday, FOP President John McNesby said he began receiving calls that Barbera's was using the photos of the officers and the Philadelphia Police Department and FOP emblems in its billboard advertisements.

What would Christmas be without a few Scrooge's? 6 ABC is reporting that a national group is asking officials in the southern New Jersey town of Pitman to take down a banner that says "Keep Christ in Christmas."


The Freedom From Religion Foundation says the banner violates the Constitution because it was put up by members of the local fire department and hangs from two town-owned light posts over a county-owned road.

Toys For Tots Donations Down Significantly In Philadelphia

Donations collected for this year's Toys for Tots campaign in Philadelphia just a fraction of previous years, prompting organizers to warn some needy children may not get presents.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports organizers have collected about 25,000 toys as part of this year's drive. Last year they delivered 113,000.
