Porch Explosion in West Philly; Woman Torches Home, Stabs Man Fleeing; Phila. Art Museum Reopens

The Philadelphia Bomb Squad was on the scene after an explosion on the front porch of a home in West Philadelphia early Sunday morning, 9/6. It happened around 3:45 a.m. on the 200 block of South 62nd Street. Someone threw an explosive device onto the porch of the home. The front windows of that home and the next door home were shattered. Police believe it was a 'M-series' device. No one was home at the time and no one was injured. The investigation is ongoing.

17-year-old La Salle College High School Football Player, Isaiah Turner, Dies After Practice Friday

A senior football player at La Salle College High School collapsed and died after practice on Friday afternoon, 9/4, at the all-boys Catholic Wyndmoor, Montgomery County school. 17-year-old Isaiah Turner was a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive guard who also played on the basketball team. He has been described as a "gentle giant" who was loved by all at the school. Turner was from the Frankford section of Philadelphia.

4 Dead in North Philly House Fire; Kensington Business Fire; Three Men Found Dead in Apartment

Four people were found dead after a house fire in North Philadelphia on Saturday morning, 9/5. It happened just before 8 a.m. on the 3300 block of Kip Street. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out from the first floor and had reports of people trapped inside. A 35-year-old mother was found downstairs and her 9-year-old son, 11-year-old daughter, and 17-year-old son were found upstairs. They were all pronounced dead at the scene. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy reversed course and extended the ban on indoor smoking at Atlantic City casinos on Friday, 9/4, after initially allowing smoking to resume through an executive order earlier this week. On Tuesday, Murphy introduced an order allowing the resumption of indoor dining on Friday, September 4th. The order also allowed for smoking to resume where permitted. The Philadelphia Catholic League is not playing fall sports this season, but three non-Archdiocesan schools that compete in the league announced that they holding an independent season against each other. La Salle College High School, St. Joseph's Prep, and Devon Prep along with fellow independent all-boys Catholic school Holy Ghost Prep will compete in cross country, golf, and soccer. Temple University in Philadelphia announced on Thursday, 9/3, that it will be moving most classes online until the end of the fall semester due to a coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. In-person classes were paused earlier this week due to an increase in cases, but that two-week suspension has now been extended. As of 9/3, there are 237 active cases on campus. Wolf said last week that he did not have legal authority to extend his executive order and pushed the General Assembly to pass legislation.
