More than 630 Palestinians and about 35 Israelis have died in the conflict in Gaza, and today protesters for both sides rallied in Center City in an effort to raise support for their efforts. Mayor Michael Nutter announced today that New Jersey singer Jon Bon Jovi would be the 2014 recipient of the Marian Anderson Award. The award "celebrates critically acclaimed artists - individuals who have used their talents for personal artistic expression and whose body of work has contributed to our society in a singular manner." The Vulcans are a roots/americana group out of Mechanicsburg, PA. Semaphore is their 2nd album and follows 2011's Shadows. I have been interested in Vulcans since I saw them at The World Cafe as winners of the Philadelphia Songwriters Project. The Sheraton in Center City was evacuated early this morning because of smoke in the basement. About 4am the fire department was called to the scene and about 1,000 people had to get out of bed and onto the streets outside the 26 story hotel. The origin of the smoke was an electrical panel in the HVAC system. After about 4 hours outside, guests were allowed to return to their rooms.

Three Atlantic City-area lawmakers want state casino regulators to force the Showboat and Trump Plaza casinos to remain open at least four more months to let prospective buyers kick the tires. Pennsylvania SPCA officers rescued a dog who was choking and tied to a fence in North Philadelphia on Tuesday. The brown and white pitbull was tied using a short cable and electrical tape to a chain link fence surrounding the tennis courts in Awbury Park. The officers have renamed the dog Venus and it is being treated at the PSPCA's Shelter Hospital. There is a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible of the abandonment. Read More |

A casino robbery in Atlantic City saw two masked gunmen make off with more than $180,000 in cash. It happened Monday morning at Caesars Atlantic City. Sources say the suspects fled in a car with two plastic cash boxes containing the cash. The State Police Casino Gaming Bureau is handling the investigation.
