A new Miss Philadelphia has been crowned. She is 22 year old Julia Rae Schlucter of Wayne, PA. Julia is a singer who battled lung conditions at Children's Hospital when she was just six years old. Now Miss Philadelphia will make over 100 appearances this year and sing at the top of her lungs to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis research.

Governor Wolf has replaced Bill Green as chair of the School Reform Commission. In making the announcement that he's named Commissioner Marjorie Neff chair of the SRC. Neff is the former principal at Masterman High. Green couldn't say whether his removal stemmed from the SRC's approving five new charter schools against the governor’s wishes. Green says he'll fight the move in court.

A police officer was injured after being struck by a car and then dragged for more than 30 feet in Burlington County, New Jersey early Saturday morning. It happened around 1 a.m. when Police Sgt. A man was hit by a SEPTA bus in North Philadelphia this afternoon. It happened shortly before 4 pm at the Olney Transportation Center at Broad and Olney. The victim, described as a man in his early 20's, had missed the bus and was trying to get the driver's attention by banging on the door. The Route 6 bus was already pulling onto Broad Street. A driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a firehouse in Northeast Philadelphia early Friday morning. It happened at Engine 52 located on the corner of Van Kirk Street and Harbison Avenue just before 2 a.m. today. The car crashed into the firehouse doors, hitting an ambulance parked inside. The impact was so strong it sent the ambulance 10 feet back into a row of steel lockers. The 40-year-old driver of the car was not injured seriously.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has passed a bill to privatize state-run liquor sales for the second time in two years. The Republican-controlled house voted 114-to-87 on the liquor privatization measure. Existing state stores selling wine and liquor would close and licenses would be sold to private retailers (with beer distributors getting first shot) to sell wine, liquor, or both. Birdwatchers in our area are enjoying the return of a rare species - the Snow Owl. The magnificent white, spotted owls with 5 foot wingspans appeared here last year in an unusually snowy season. At that time, birdwatchers called it a once-in-a-lifetime event. The Snowy Owls apparently like it here and have been spotted from open fields in Berks County to the dunes at the Jersey shore.

A New Jersey bus aide has been charged with stealing bagged lunches and lunch money from preschoolers in January and February. 33-year-old Rosa Rios of Millville, NJ, was caught on surveillance video going through the backpacks of the 3-5 year-old students and taking lunches and money. She reportedly stole from 29 children. Authorities were reviewing the footage because the bus driver had reported $400 being stolen from her. Rios is being investigated for that theft.
