Kwanzaa Begins

The African American Cultural and Arts Center and Museum in Camden held its 10th annual Kwanzaa Celebration on Monday afternoon to mark the first of the seven principles of the holiday.

It included music, an acknowledgment of the elders, a sign of respect to those that have died, and a candle lighting ceremony in which the black candle is lit symbolizing the first principle of Kwanzaa which is unity.

Lacey's Law Goes Into Effect

A law imposing new restrictions on teen drivers in Pennsylvania goes into effect Tuesday December 27. Lacey's Law is named after Lacey Gallagher who died in the spring of 2007 while riding in a crowded SUV when the vehicle lost control on the PA turnkpike.

New provisions include increasing the behind-the-wheel training for young drivers by 15 hours.

The Roots 13th Album Released: Undun

Philly hip hop band, The Roots released their 13th album this month titled Undun, and it's their first concept album.

Undun narrates the story of a bootstrapping hustler in reverse, from death to birth.

The group has also released a short film to coincide with the album, directed by Clifton Bell and telling the story of a young man named Redford Stephens who chooses a life of crime which some call an impressive pictorial story.

PA Texting Law to Overshadow Philadelphia Cellphone Ban

The Pennsylvania state's new texting while driving ban, effective March 8, 2012, will effectively wipe out the 2 year old Philadelphia city ordinance banning total cell phone use. The state law only bans texting but allows for other use of the devices such as dialing, GPS, music, etc. You can hold and manipulate the device any way use wish, just not for texting. Philadelphia's law banned any use of a phone including phone calls but the state law will trump any local ordinances.

John Bolaris Suspended Over Comments to Playboy

Philadelphia TV meteorologist John Bolaris has been suspended indefinitely by Fox 29 after Playboy magazine published an article about his being drugged and scammed by two women in Miami Beach in March 2010.

A Chance Remains to Save Philadelphia Refinery Jobs

There is still a chance that buyers will be found for the Philadelphia-area refineries that have closed or are being closed by Sunoco and ConocoPhillips, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
