School Of The Pennsylvania Ballet to Return

This week, the Pennsylvania Ballet plans to break ground at 321 N. Broad St. for a $17.5 million project that will feature five dance studios, offices, and facilities for a soon-to-return School of the Pennsylvania Ballet.

The organization has raised $11.2 million for the first phase of the project which will pay for the demolition of an existing building and renovation of a former garage for Brink's trucks into four dance studios.

Philadelphia Orchestra Opening Moved Due to Strike

The Philadelphia Orchestra will open as scheduled on Thursday, but not at the Kimmel Center. Negotiations are continuing between Kimmel and striking Local 8, but the outcome of those talks is still uncertain. So the opening will take place at Irvine Auditorium at the University of Pennsylvania. The post concert gala will be moved to Penn's Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. City Employers Facing Paid Sick Days

A bill requiring all city employers to provide paid sick leave was vetoed by Mayor Nutter in June, but a different plan received City Council committee approval this week.

The bill, which would require the city and employers with city contracts, funding or leases, to provide up to seven earned sick days a year and would be a part of the living-wage and benefits law.

DRPA Bridge Traffic Down

Higher tolls have meant less traffic on four Delaware River bridges linking Philadelphia and South Jersey.

Since tolls increased by $1, traffic has been down about 4 percent on the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, and Betsy Ross Bridges.
Bridge traffic is at the lowest level in more than a decade, projected to dip to 50 million vehicles this year. The peak was 55 million in 2007.

Apple's Steve Jobs Passes at Age 56

The iconic and legendary former CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has passed away today at age 56. He has been fighting cancer and other health issues the past few years. His death marks the end of that battle that took him away from Apple on extended hiatuses, the last ending with his resignation of CEO to Tim Cook in August.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey Not Running for President

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced today that he will not seek the Republican nomination to run for President. After much recent speculation, Christie officially declared his intentions to remain in the governor's mansion for now saying "now is not my time."
