Archdiocese Cuts Catholic Standard and More Jobs, Sandusky's Son Allegations, Heat Damaged Roads

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia will end publication of the Catholic Standard and Times and suspend Phaith Magazine. These and more cuts are an effort to reduce a projected deficit exceeding $17 million. The Archdiocesan Pastoral Center will reduce staff by 45 positions, consolidating 19 offices. There will also be no raises for the remaining staff next year.

Roxborough Woman Dead With Rope In Her Throat, Philadelphia School Funding Reduced, Camden Water

A Roxborough woman is behind bars on charges she murdered a neighbor by stuffing a piece of rope down her throat. Philadelphia police say 49-year-old Geraldine Cherry is jailed on charges of killing 70-year-old Kathleen McEwan, who police say was in the care of Resources for Human Development. The piece of cotton rope was discovered after McEwan’s body was taken to John J. Breyers funeral home in Willow Grove to be prepared for burial.

Philadelphia Police Officer Jonathan Garcia Arrested on Drug Charges, Could Face More.

Yesterday, 23-year-old Philadelphia police officer Jonathan Garcia was charged with selling heroin to a confidential informant working for the FBI. Garcia, a three year vet stationed at the 17th District in South Philly, was charged with four counts of distribution of heroin and two counts of carrying a firearm during drug trafficking. Camden's water supply has run critically low. Residents living west of the Cooper River are being advised to boil any water coming from the tap used for preparing food, making ice, or brushing teeth. People who have been illegally popping fire hydrants due to the hot weather may have contributed to the dangerous drop in water pressure throughout the city. The jury in the Philadelphia Clergy Abuse case is gridlocked. The jury reports being hung on 4 of 5 charges. That’s all but one of the counts. Judge Teresa Sarmina is urging the jurors to continue deliberations and try to come to agreement on all counts when they resume on Friday.

Philadelphia police are searching for a woman who was caught on surveillance camera assaulting a man on a SEPTA bus last month. Police say a woman described as black, 5'5" with a stocky build boarded the bus, approached a man sitting a few rows behind her and began assaulting him,punched and slapped the victim, causing injuries to his head and face. She was wearing a pink shirt, dark jeans and white sunglasses.

Clergy Abuse Jury says they are "hung"; Police Officer arrested for selling heroin

The jury sent note back in the Clergy Abuse trial telling the court they have reached 'hung status' on four of the five charges. The jury was then led back into the court room where they were encouraged to continue their deliberations and try to come to a verdict. They were given a Spencer charge by Judge Sarmina which is a standard charge to tell a jury to keep deliberating. Michael Phelps picked his events for the upcoming London Olympics. In addition to the three team relays he will participate in, Phelps entered into seven other individual events. This means that Phelps is in the running for 10 Olympic medals, which would outdo his 8 medals from Beijing. To up the ante, Phelps was recently on 60 Minutes, where he said that he would retire after the London Olympics.
