started: 08/16/11 3:41 am | updated: 08/16/11 1:41 pm

Former Phillie ('03-'05) Jim Thome, 40, now playing for the Minnesota Twins, became only the 8th player to have hit 600 home runs for their career. That came tonight after hitting a 3 run shot to left field off Daniel Schiereth in the 7th inning at Comerica Park in Detroit. Despite giving the Twins the 9-5 lead, Tigers fans cheered him as he rounded the bases on this monumental occasion. Thome had hit #599 on his previous at bat in the 6th inning, that was a two-run shot.

Phillies Offense is Alive

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 08/04/11 12:59 pm | updated: 08/04/11 12:59 pm

The Phillies offense has suddenly perked up and is producing more hits and runs. According to Charlie Manuel, "this is hitting season" the summer months when he expects bats to come alive. The recent addition of Hunter Pence to the 5 spot in the batting order behind Ryan Howard seems to be forcing pitchers to throw Howard more fastballs. And the big man has responded with multiple home run games. Howard simply attributes his burst to being a second half guy. Whatever it is, it's working. ... Read More

Eagles Big Moves Raise Expectations

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 08/01/11 8:36 am | updated: 08/01/11 8:36 am

The Philadelphia Eagles have raised the bar. With key trades and some surprisingly aggressive free agent signings, the Eagles have elevated expectations around the league, and among fans in Philadelphia. Gang Green now includes marquis names like Cromartie, Asomugha, Evans, Jenkins, Washburn and Babin. Add these guys to a roster that already includes names like Vick, Samuel and Jackson, and a good looking team starts to look great. Still to do - sign the top draft pick and Desean Jackson to... Third baseman Placido Polanco has been activated for tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's been on the DL since July 15th with lower back inflammation, and just completed a two game rehab assignment. In order to make room for him on the roster, RF Domonic Brown has been optioned down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He will start tonight for the IronPigs.

Newly acquired Hunter Pence will start in right field tonight for the Phillies. Right hand reliever Drew Carpenter... Read More

It was a huge Friday in the Philly sports world, and that doesn't count anything that actually happened on the field.

Philadelphia Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. pulled off another great mid-summer deal sending prospects Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singleton, Josh Zeid and a player to be named to the Houston Astros for All-Star Right Fielder Hunter Pence. This season Pence is hitting .309, with 11 HR, 62 RBI, .356 OBP, and .472 slugging. The right handed bat is a welcomed addition to... Read More

Eagles Trade Kolb for Cromartie

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 07/29/11 9:17 am | updated: 07/29/11 9:17 am

The Philadelphia Eagles are sending quarterback Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for pro bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Eagles coach Reid has already anointed Cromartie the starting right corner, an upgrade the Birds need and gives their defense the biggest boost since Asante Samuel arrived. But what did the Eagles lose? Does the loss of Kevin Kolb leave them too thin at the QB position? Word is, the Eagles have former Titans starter Vince Young in mind as... Read More

Lockout End Gets Eagles Back to the Nest

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 07/26/11 8:22 am | updated: 07/26/11 8:22 am

The NFL players and owners finally agreed to terms of a new deal that should keep football going uninterrupted for another 10 years. This is good news because Birds fans have been growing increasingly disgusted hearing about the business side of the game. Eagles fans resent both sides of an argument between millionaires and billionaires when it interferes with football. Hopefully the damage is minimal and the Eagles can get a lot done in just a few days. Training camp is shortened. The... Read More

Will the Phillies Win 100?

  by: iradiotom - Philadelphia, PA
started: 07/15/11 11:53 am | updated: 07/15/11 11:53 am

The Phillies are on pace to win over 100 games this season. But that's not their goal. The Phillies fans, players and managers believe that another World Series title is within reach. They have been able to win despite injuries and lackluster run production. However with the trade deadline approaching they have an opportunity to make the second half even better. Charlie Manuel would love to add a right handed slugger to bat 5th behind Ryan Howard.

Manuel has used seven... Read More

started: 07/09/11 1:36 pm | updated: 07/09/11 1:36 pm

The Phillies head into the All Star break with the best record in baseball. Five Phillies were named All Stars, but it appears Polanco and Victorino will pass and use the time to recover from injuries. After pitching Sunday in the first half finale, Hamels may skip the All Star game as well. Despite a growing list of players on and off the disabled list, the Phillies are the best team in baseball. As this is shaping up to be the year of the pitcher, the Phillies investment in arms is paying... Read More
