Philadelphia Police Officer Deona Carter's services will likely cost city taxpayers a half-million dollars this year.
About $75,000 in salary and overtime - plus the $425,000 that city attorneys yesterday agreed to pay to settle three federal lawsuits filed by people who say that Carter assaulted or wrongly arrested them.
Carter, an officer in West Philly's 18th District, remains on active duty.
In June, Internal Affairs opened an investigation into... Read More |

The new curfew law that Mayor Nutter promised this summer after youths were arrested in a series of random beatings in Center City is introduced this week.
It would lower the hours when unaccompanied minors can be on the streets, and would set distinct curfews for three age groups - 13 and younger; 14 and 15; and 16 and 17.
The new law also would be structured around the school year. When school is in session, children 13 and younger would have to be off the... Read More |

Sometime in the next three months, state lawmakers will begin formally considering a bill that would make Philadelphia finally deal with its 100,000-plus backlog of tax-delinquent properties.
Philadelphia has more tax delinquent properties per parcel than any other big city in the country.
The delinquency epidemic has deprived the city and the School District of $472 million in unpaid taxes, penalties, and interest. In addition, there is the blighting effect that... Read More |

Hurricane Irene caused minimal structural damage to Atlantic City's casinos. But its revenue numbers have taken a huge hit dropping 19.8 percent, or $59.6 million from August last year.
Other factors adding to the hurricane-forced closure of the casinos include a weak economy and fierce competition from Pennsylvania casinos, which remained open during the hurricane.
By comparison, Pennsylvania's 10 casinos (with the exception of SugarHouse, which has not been... Read More |

According to Mayor Nutter, Philadelphia's weekend curfew imposed on Center City and University City remains in effect until the curfew law can be rewritten.
He said there had been no more attacks attributed to so-called flash-mob violence since the curfew was enacted.
Nutter had 20 of the city's largest rec centers extend their hours to 10 p.m. on weekends.
Based on usage in August, Nutter said, eight of those centers would continue to keep... Read More |

President Obama this week stood on a bridge overlooking the rain-swollen and fast-rushing Passaic River in Paterson, New Jersey, and said the federal government would work to rebuild towns recovering from Hurricane Irene's wrath.
The Passaic had washed over the bridge, flooded the downtown and forced hundreds to evacuate cresting at a record 14 feet, twice its flood stage, depositing debris and muddy water stains on buildings and homes across Paterson.
Obama... Read More |
