Princeton University's Angus Deaton has won the Nobel prize in economics for "his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare." Sixty nine year old Deaton was born in Edinburgh but now works at Princeton in New Jersey and has both U.S. and British citizenship. Deaton's work revolves around three central questions: How do consumers distribute their spending; how much income is spent and saved; and how do we best measure and analyze welfare and poverty? A special friend of the iRadioPhilly family needs help. First responder Vince "Lenny" D'Achille a 38-year veteran firefighter and EMT was injured while fighting a fire in early August and was hospitalized due to complications from smoke inhalation.

The strike by 65 NBC10 camera operators and broadcast technicians is getting tense. Philadelphia's #2 local news station posted on job sites to hire replacement workers. Meanwhile, IBEW Local 98 has targeted Comcast, which owns NBC10 through its NBCUniversal subsidiary, as a strike tactic. The union has picketed the Comcast Center and posted an inflatable rat outside its doors.

A Montgomery County mother has pleaded guilty to injecting her 14-year-old daughter and her daughter's boyfriend with heroin. 36 year old Patricia Davenport of Harleysville entered a guilty plea last week and her trial begins today. Another mom was arrested for a similar crime in Chester County last week. The owner of the Wildwood home that washed into the bay is paying to have the home and debris removed from the water. Meanwhile some neighbors are saying good riddance to the Grassy Sound home swept off its pilings Saturday. They say it was a structurally unsound nuisance and the home was doomed to wind up in the bay. A former America's Junior Miss from New Jersey died after being found unconscious in a doorway in New York. Kiersten Cerveny, who grew up in Gloucester County, was found unconscious Sunday in the doorway of a New York City apartment building. She was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The 38 year old mother of three was a dermatologist and lived on Long Island. Toxicology and autopsy reports are pending.

Authorities at Philadelphia-area universities and colleges are closely monitoring what officials are calling a "threat of violence" that was made online. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosive (ATF) informed officials at schools that the threat was made online against "a university near Philadelphia." Hall and Oates christened the new Fillmore in Fishtown last night before a sold out crowd of 2,500. Sixty-eight year old Darryl Hall joked that he used to be afraid to go to Fishtown 43 years ago. Hall and Oates started the set with "Maneater" and went on with a blue eyed-soul-pop evening filled with classic hits. The club complex is the seventh Live Nation-owned Fillmore in the United States, named after the original Fillmore founded by Bill Graham in San Francisco in 1965.

The Philadelphia area's first serious hurricane scare in three years has meteorologists and emergency management officials warning that "dangerous" conditions are building and major flooding could arrive by the end of the week. That would be before the potential main event - Hurricane Joaquin gets anywhere near here. More flooding is possible early next week. The threats include heavy rains, flash flooding, widespread river flooding, beach erosion, and power-line-ripping winds.
