Holiday shoppers were out at the last minute today all around the Delaware Valley. The Italian market was a popular venue as locals stocked up on antipasto, pastries, and fish for the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes. Bakeries were also doing brisk business serving fresh pies, bread and other baked good to customers for holiday meals. A massive water main break flooded areas of Frankford this morning causing many delays, evacuations, and closures. A 48-inch water main broke shortly before 9 a.m. at the intersection of Frankford and Torresdale Avenues. Water came rushing into the area flooding out area business and streets. The water department was able to identify the location of the break and close the appropriate values by around 11:30 am. The Philadelphia School District dismissed more than 30 schools early on... 8-year-old Delaney Brown of West Reading, PA was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in May. Earlier this week her doctors came back with a tough prognosis giving her only days maybe weeks to live. Laney has her own 'wishlist' including meeting nearby Wyomissing native Taylor Swift (she did get to speak to her on the phone on her eighth birthday). A Philadelphia High School was placed on lockdown on Friday afternoon after an armed robbery. It happened at Jules E. Mastbaum Area Vocational Technical High School at 3116 Frankford Ave. in the Kensington at dismissal time or around 3 pm. Two students and a masked gunman assaulted and robbed another student before fleeing. The lockdown was lifted at 4:20 pm. The Central Pennsylvania minister who officiated at his son's same-sex marriage in Massachusetts has been defrocked by the United Methodist Church. Rev. Frank Schaefer met with church officials this morning after serving a 30-day suspension for violating the church's Book of Discipline. Police are looking for a suspect who attacked and robbed a woman outside the Willow Grove Park Mall. It happened on Monday, Dec 16th at around 8 pm. The 66-year-old woman was leaving the Macy's on the second level parking lot when she was knocked to the ground sustaining injuries to her face, hands, and knees. The suspect stole her purse. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its inductees for the Class of 2014. This year's performer inductees are Philadelphia's own Hall and Oates, Nirvana, Cat Stevens, Kiss, Linda Ronstadt, and Peter Gabriel. The Award for Musical Excellence goes to The E Street Band. 72-year-old Kermit Gosnell has been sentenced today in a federal case for illegally distributing OxyContin and other painkillers from his West Philadelphia clinic. He pled guilty to the charges last July. Gosnell would write prescriptions and sell them to dealers and addicts inside his clinic, essentially running a “pill mill”.
