Former Phillie ('03-'05) Jim Thome, 40, now playing for the Minnesota Twins, became only the 8th player to have hit 600 home runs for their career. That came tonight after hitting a 3 run shot to left field off Daniel Schiereth in the 7th inning at Comerica Park in Detroit. Despite giving the Twins the 9-5 lead, Tigers fans cheered him as he rounded the bases on this monumental occasion. Thome had hit #599 on his previous at bat in the 6th inning, that was a two-run shot.

Teen Curfew Begins in Philadelphia and will be Enforced |

Beginning tonight at 9 pm the extended earlier curfew for teens 18 and under took effect in Center City and University City. Additional police patrol on foot, bike, and mount will be on patrol to enforce and pick up violators.
This new curfew is all in an effort by Chief Ramsey's police force to curb the teen mobs that have become an increasing problem for businesses and the public at large. The hope is to help reduce the random violence and vandalism that pops up with these... Read More |

Every August as the Earth's orbit takes it through the remains of the comet Swift-Tuttle, we are treated to a dramatic show of meteors streaking through the sky called the Perseids. Named because they seem to radiate from the constellation Perseus, these meteors will peak as always in the early morning hours of Friday August 12th and Saturday August 13th.

On Tuesday, August 9 at 4:00am GMT on the third night of these increasingly senseless riots, the distribution warehouse for Sony/PIAS was set ablaze in North London. It was a 3 story/20,000 sq.ft facility mainly used by PIAS, a distribution company, that deals mainly with indie labels and stored cd's and vinyl for more that 150 labels on site.

Third baseman Placido Polanco has been activated for tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's been on the DL since July 15th with lower back inflammation, and just completed a two game rehab assignment. PA Turnpike to Raise Cash Tolls |

Starting January 1, 2012 the tolls on the PA turnpike will be hiked 10% for all those paying cash. There will be no change in the toll rate for EZpass lanes.
The Turnpike commission is hoping to raise revenues by $23 million or about 3% with this toll increase. Increases have also been approved for 2013 and 2014.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia with it's 1.5 million Catholics will receive a new pastoral leader this year. It was long anticipated that Cardinal Justin Rigali would be replaced as Archbishop after submitting his official retirement papers last year. All bishops are required to retire at age 75, Rigali turned 75 in April '10.
