Manayunk Bridge Trail Now Open; Inquirer and Daily News to Merge; Officer Injured in West Philly

The Manayunk Bridge Trail over the Schuylkill River opened today for the first time in almost 30 years. The bridge trail is .6 miles long and open exclusively for bicycles and pedestrians. It connects Lower Merion's Cynwyd Heritage Trail with the Schuylkill River Trail and Main Street in Manayunk. The construction took 4 years and cost $5.76 million. Also known as the Manayunk Viaduct, the bridge was built as a railroad bridge in 1918 and was closed in 1986.

Pennsylvania State Police used shotguns to deflate the runaway Army surveillance blimp that broke loose from its mooring in Maryland and came to rest in some trees in North-central Pennsylvania. The 243-foot long craft was tethered at Aberdeen Proving Ground and came free early yesterday afternoon. It caused power outages as its tether got caught it power lines along its way. An unmanned Army surveillance blimp broke free from its tether at a military base in Maryland this afternoon and was floating aimlessly north over Pennsylvania this afternoon causing power outages as it's cable dragged over power lines. The Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System (JLENS) broke free from it's tether in Aberdeen, MD around 12:20pm. NORAD tracked the blimp as it drifted north. Chester County Police say that the man who flipped his car into a pond earlier this month, killing himself and his brother, had a blood alcohol content nearly five times the legal limit. 52-year-old Thomas McAleer was behind the wheel around 4:30 pm on October 2nd driving on Glenn Avenue in Berwyn. Authorities in Camden County, New Jersey are investigating a shooting at an assisted living facility that they are calling a murder-suicide. It happened around 5:30 p.m. at the Genesis Healthcare Facility on the 3000 block of Evesham Road in Vorhees. 62-year-old George Bullet III of Lumberton came to visit his mother, 85-year-old Andree Bullet. Authorities have captured a fugitive convicted on drug charges who escaped from a South Jersey prison early on Saturday morning. 41-year-old Panagioti Souris was arrested without incident around 4 p.m. at 6th and Market in Philadelphia. Officials with the New Jersey Department of Corrections noticed that he was missing from his bed at the Ancora facility of Bayside State Prison Saturday around 6 a.m. Souris was serving a maximum sentence of five years for two heroin charges. The country's oldest polar bear died on Friday at the Philadelphia Zoo. Klondike was 34-years-old. Zoo officials started noticing a serious decline in her health starting two weeks ago and she had difficulty standing and walking. Despite treatment she was not improving and they decided to euthanize her this morning. Klondike was born at the Bronx Zoo in 1980 and has lived at the Philadelphia Zoo since 1981. Police in Radnor Township have arrested a man accused of trying to lure three students outside an elementary school. It happened around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of West Wayne and Arbordale Avenues near Wayne Elementary School in Delaware County.
