Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney signed an executive order last week, 1/27, designating a new City holiday and changing the name of another. Kenney designated June 19, Juneteenth, a holiday for all City employees. Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 that Union troops brought word of the Emancipation Proclamation and the freedom of slaves to Texas. A woman was critically injured after a car crashed into her home on Saturday night, 2/6, in Northeast Philadelphia. It happened around 8:20 p.m. on the 2800 block of Comly Road near Caroline Road near Northeast Philadelphia Airport. A 27-year-old drove through the front of the house and pinned the 53-year-old resident under the car. She was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in critical condition. The driver was arrested at the scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation.Read More

A female substitute teacher in Burlington County, New Jersey, is accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student. 41-year-old Kameelah Kareem of Willingboro is charged with second degree sexual assault and second degree endangering the welfare of a child. Kareem met the 15-year-old student while working as a substitute at the Alternative School at Bookbinder during the 2019-20 school year. Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid, son of head coach Any Reid, was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on Thursday night, 2/4, that sent two children to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries. 35-year-old Reid admitted to a responding officer that he'd had "two or three drinks" and also takes prescription Adderall.

Philadelphia Police have identified two suspects wanted for carjacking an elderly woman last week in South Philly. Police are searching for 18-year-old Briana Cruz-Gordon and 17-year-old Taniyah Watson. It happened on Wednesday, 1/27, on the 2600 block of South Bancroft Street. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf laid out his fiscal year 2021-22 proposed budget and legislative plan on Wednesday, 2/3. The biggest proposal in the $37.8 billion spending plan is for a large increase in public education spending, almost $2 billion that is a 20% increase, with an emphasis on fair and equitable funding.
